Standard Output UV Ballast


The following UV ballasts are designed to run standard output UV germicidal lights.The lamps operate typically at 425 mA. Although standard UV lamps emit lower UV Intensity then high output UV lamps, they are widely used in residential drinking water UV system and air purification markets due to lower cost.

High Output UV Ballast


The following UV ballasts are designed for High-output lamps have hot cathode filaments sized to operate from 800 up to 1200 mA. Gas mixture and pressure are optimized to deliver a much higher UV-C output while maintaining long lamp life, in the same lamp dimensions as standard-output lamps, but High Output (HO) lamps can emit 66% more UV output when compared to standard lamps. HO lamps offer system designers unique opportunities to decrease the number of lamps required without compromising functionality of the system. High output UV lamps mainly used in commercial water disinfection and air purification market.

Amalgam UV Lamp Ballast


The following UV ballasts are suitable for Amalgam UV lamps, Amalgam lamps have hot cathode filaments sized to operate at 1200 mA to 8000mA. The gas mixture, pressure, and sometimes lamp diameter have been optimized for delivering even higher UV output without deteriorating lamp life. UV lamps use electrodes between which the electrical discharge runs and are filled with a noble gas such as argon, neon, or a mix thereof. A small amount of mercury is present in the envelope. The electrodes are very important for the lamp’s behavior. Amalgam UV lamps mainly used for industrial and municipal water treatment, swimming pool, aquarium disinfection and Agricultural irrigation disinfection.

Medium Pressure UV Lamp Ballast


The following UV ballasts are suitable for Medium Pressure UV lamps, The wavelength range of medium pressure lamp ultraviolet is 200nm-400nm and can emit UV density up to 100W/cm2, they mainly used to kill bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms in water, and is widely used in sewage water treatment, ballast water disinfection and UV Curing filed. The advantage of medium pressure UV lamp is longer service life and more faster disinfection speed then low pressure UV lampls, and also they can automatically detect the ultraviolet intensity

Usually UV lamp life is from 9000 to 12000 hours depending on different brands, the best can reach to 16000 hours, normally using one year you need to replace the Germicidal lamp because the UV output dose will get weaker and weaker and affect the sterilization effect.

UV ballast lifespan is much longer then UV lamp. Mid-end ballasts can generally be used for 3-5 years when the parameters of the electronic ballast are completely matched with the UV lamps. High-end ballasts typically have a lifespan of 5-10 years. The design service life of Haisen UV ballast is generally 10 years, many our customers use our ballasts more than 10 years and still serve well.

A UV system is composed of UV lights, UV ballasts, as well as UV Sensors.Choosing a suitable ballast not only ensures the normal operation of the UV system, but also can ensure the lifespan of the UV lamp.
How to choose best suitable ballasts for your UV bulbs and system? You need to consider the following factors such as UV lamp brand, Model No and parameter, Input Voltage, ballast size, signal feedback and control etc.

1.Confirm UV ballast parameters

Once we get the UV lamp brand, Model No, lamp current,lamp power, preheat current, preheat time, we can choose the same range current and Power ballast for you.It is important to know the brand of UV lamps, as different UV lamps have different filament preheating currents and preheating times, we need to adjust our Ballast parameter according to these info so that totally match your UV lights.

 

2. Confirm UV Ballast start-up type

If your UV lamp are 2 pins ,it need to use our Instant start electronic ballasts(EPL)
If your UV lamp are 4 pins, it need to use our Preheat start electronic ballasts(EPS)

Waterproof version: if the ballasts have the risk of rain (IP65) or needs socked in water (IP68), you need to choose our waterproof ballast.

 

5. UV Lamp Status feedback

Sometimes, you need to know the UV lamp status, so the ballast need to show the signal.There are 3 types feedback you can choose, LED Indication, 5V signal and relay contacts

6.Remote Control or dimming request

There are two ways to remotely control, one is to use a ballast with remote switch function for remote control on/off. Another way is to use intelligent ballasts with remote communication interfaces such as RS232/RS485.
Some ballasts also have dimming function, which can be divided into PWM dimming, 0-10V voltage dimming, and 4-20mA current dimming according to the dimming method. For some ballasts with communication control functions, remote switching and dimming can be choose.

Haisen provides design services for customized UV ballasts. After you send us your UV ballast requirements, we’ll provide you with the design cost, lead time, and minimum order quantity (MOQ). Typically, the lead time for customized ballasts sample from 15 to 30 days, depending on the complexity of the design. Usually the MOQ is 500-1000 pcs for ODM products

Step 3: Transfer the Design Cost to Haisen

Once you agree to the design cost and lead time, you can transfer the design cost to Haisen. Due to the specially customized ballast, our engineers have to spend a lot of time drawing PCB boards. We need to find new suppliers and make samples, which requires a lot of manpower and material resourcesThe design cost ensures that our engineers have the resources required to design the customized UV ballast to your specifications.

Step 4: Haisen Starts Design and Makes 1-2 Free Samples

After receiving the design cost, Haisen’s engineers will start designing the customized UV ballast to your specifications. We may provide a 3D design to give you an idea of what the final product will look like.
Once the design is complete, we’ll manufacture 1-2 free samples for you to test. These samples will allow you to verify that the ballasts meet your requirements and function as needed.

Step 5: Confirm Samples or Propose Improvement Suggestions

After testing the free samples, you can confirm that they meet your requirements, or you can propose improvement suggestions. If you want to make changes, we’ll work with you to modify the ballast until it meets your requirements.

Step 6: Sample is Finally Confirmed and Sealed

After any changes are made to the samples, we’ll manufacture a final version of the UV ballast for you to confirm. Once you confirm that it meets your requirements, we’ll seal the design, and you can proceed to mass production.

Step 7: Mass Production

1.Appearance inspection

The UV lamp ballast is the core component of the UV lamp and UV system, which converts the unstable alternating current into a stable direct current and provides high-frequency pulses to make the UV lamp work.

The process of lighting up ultraviolet lamps with UV ballast mainly includes multiple stages such as power filtering, voltage transformation, rectification, filtering, voltage regulation, oscillation, etc.

Firstly, power filtering is to ensure the quality of the input current of the power supply, making it stable and clean.

Secondly, the transformer increases or decreases the input voltage of the power supply to meet the working requirements of the ultraviolet lamp.

Thirdly, rectification converts the AC current output by the transformer into DC current

Fourthly, the filtering process is aimed at filtering out clutter and ripple in the DC current, making it more stable

Fifthly, the voltage regulation process is to ensure that the DC current input to the UV lamp is stable within a certain voltage range.

Finally, the oscillation stage by capacitance and inductance provides high-frequency pulses to make the UV lamp work, and the current during the operation of the lamp is reasonably controlled.

The closer the frequency of inductance and capacitance is,the resonance will occur.When these two frequencies coincide,a high voltage will be instantly generated,which is the starting voltage of the ballast.The starting voltage is the maximum output load of the electronic ballast,and the starting voltage must be higher than the starting voltage of the lamp tube to turn on the ultraviolet lamp.

After the UV light is turned on, the ballast provides a normal current to the UV light to maintain its operation

Through the above steps, unstable power input can be converted into stable DC current, and the UV lamp can work stably

There are three main ballast start up types of UV ballast: Instant Start Ballasts (Haisen EPL Series), Rapid Start Ballasts (Haisen EPW series) and Preheat Start Ballasts (Hiasen EPS series). Knowing these three features is important when matching your UV lamp and design your UV systems.

Instant Start UV Ballast ( EPL Series)

Rapid Start UV Ballast (EPW Series)

For situations where the usage environment is relatively good, frequent start-up is not required, and the budget for ballasts is limited, fast start or instant start ballasts can be used,Switch on/off less than 4 times a day, normally matched standard output UV lamp Air sterilization use.

Preheat Start UV Ballast ( EPS Series)

For situations with frequent switching on/off, low working environment temperature, high lifespan and reliability requirements, and the use of mercury or High output UV lamps, ballasts with preheat start function need to be use, these ballasts normally used for water treatment market.

UV lamp ballasts and fluorescent ballasts are different in circuit structure and function, so they are usually not interchangeable. UV lamp ballasts are specifically designed for UV lamps, with high-frequency circuit design and specific current and voltage regulation functions to ensure the safe and effective operation of UV lamps. By contrast, fluorescent ballasts may not be suitable for UV lamps as they have not been optimized for this specific purpose.

fluorescent ballasts are mainly used to drive light sources such as ordinary incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, or LED lamps, while UV lamp ballasts are specifically designed for UV lamps.

In terms of circuit structure, UV lamp ballasts usually use high-frequency circuit design, but fluorescent ballasts may use low-frequency circuits.

The special ultraviolet applications , such as ultraviolet disinfection lamps, sterilization lamps, and photo therapy lamps in the medical industry, require to use of specialized ultraviolet lamp ballasts to precisely control the current and voltage.

Therefore, UV lamp ballasts should not be used for non UV lamps unless it is ensured that the selected ballast is perfectly matched with the ultraviolet lamp, and vice versa. Doing so may cause the lamp to malfunction or damage the lamp itself

1.UV lamp is not bright enough, or the lamp tube turns red?

First check whether the lamp tube matches the UV ballast, then check if the working temperature is too low. Too low temperature can cause the lamp power not enough and turns red.

 

2 UV Lamps turns black

Input voltage error
Frequently turn on and turn off the UV lamps
Starting voltage is too high or mistake preheat time
UV ballast prehear current too high

check whether the lamp tube matches the UV ballast, make sure if too many time of turn on and turn off the UV lamp. If many times turn on the UV lamps one day, pls use our Preheat start models, if turn on/off lower than 4 time one day, pls choose our instant start models.

 

3.High surface temperature of UV ballast

Since the ballast is a power product, the heating is normal. As long as the surface temperature of the shell is lower than 70 ° C, it can work normally.If the customer feels overheated, they can cool down the ballast by air cooling

 

4.UV ballast have power , but UV lamp doesn’t turn on

Check the datasheet to see if the UV lamp matches the UV ballasts, and then check if UV lamp and UV ballast connect right

 

5.Ballast do not have respond

Check whether the power supply has power, whether the voltage is consistent with the ballast voltage, and whether the power line is connected correctly

There are two types of UV ballasts: Inductive ballasts and Electronic ballasts. Inductive ballasts are inductors made of copper wire wound on silicon steel sheets, which are heavy, high in energy consumption, have a high failure rate for unstable voltage situations, and cannot achieve automatic control and monitoring. They have gradually been replaced by electronic ballasts. Electronic ballasts have the advantages of energy saving, eliminating flicker, making UV lamps more stable, having a higher power factor, and extending the lifespan of lamps. Currently, electronic ballasts are mainly used in the market to match UV lamps.

There are obvious differences between low pressure and Medium Pressure UV lamps in wavelength,Effect,Structure.lifespan,Disinfection speed and Safety.

Definition and wavelength: The wavelength range of medium pressure lamp ultraviolet is 200nm-400nm, while the wavelength range of low pressure lamp ultraviolet is 100nm-280nm.

Effect: Low pressure lamp ultraviolet radiation is mainly used to kill bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms in the air, making the air fresher; Medium pressure ultraviolet lamp radiation is mainly used to kill bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms in water, and is widely used in water treatment and other fields.

Structure: Medium pressure ultraviolet lamps use xenon gas to emit ultraviolet rays, while low pressure ultraviolet lamps require the addition of liquid or vapor mercury to emit ultraviolet rays.

Lamp lifespan: The service life of medium pressure UV lamps is longer than that of low pressure UV lamps.

Disinfection speed: The disinfection speed of the medium pressure ultraviolet sterilizer is faster.

Safety: The medium pressure ultraviolet sterilizer can automatically detect the ultraviolet intensity of the environment during use, preventing ultraviolet leakage and making it safer and more reliable.
