UV Ballast types
There are two types of UV ballasts: Inductive ballasts and Electronic ballasts.
– Magnetic Ballasts – Use electromagnetic induction to provide power to UV lamps. They consist of a laminated steel core surrounded by copper wire windings. Magnetic ballasts are more affordable but less efficient than electronic ballasts.
– Electronic Ballasts – Use solid-state electronic circuitry with high frequency switching to ignite and power UV lamps. They are more energy efficient and allow for better control and monitoring compared to magnetic ballasts. Electronic ballasts are commonly used for high-power UV lamps.
The appropriate UV ballast must be selected based on the type, wattage, and quantity of UV lamps in a disinfection system. The ballast transforms the facility voltage and current into the specific electrical conditions needed to properly power the UV lamps for disinfection applications.
